What is The Difference between Parked Domains, Addon Domains, and Subdomains
In order to determine the difference between these 3 terms – parked domains, addon domains, and subdomains we are going to explain exactly what these terms mean.
What is Subdomain?A subdomain is known as a completely different website with its own content but without a new domain name. The subdomain is a part of the domain name but Google and other search engines are considered as a totally different site. So, you can use your current domain name and change the www to something else.
The subdomain should have this form help.exampledomain.com or forums.exampledomain.com, and etc. As we said before, the subdomain is the part before your actual domain name.
What is Addon Domain?
Addon domain is the second website. This type of domain doesn’t demand to register a new domain before hosting the domain. So, if you decide to host www.otherdomain.com there this is your solution.
So, how you can create an addon domain?
The addon domains are handled in a similar way as the subdomains when it comes to file structure listed in the file directory. But, the addon domain name shows up like a primary domain. Usually, nothing happens with the addon domain’s files and it should not affect anything that goes on with the other domains. Even though addon domains don’t have their own cPanel, you will still be able to create subdomains, redirects, email accounts, QuickInstall installations, and etc. The web statistics and information for the addon domains can be found under the URL of the subdomain in the statistics app in the cPanel.
So, in order to create an addon domain you need to follow these 3 steps:
- Create a New Domain Name - Login to your cPanel and choose the option Addon Domains that is located under Domains. Enter the new domain but make sure not to put www or http in the domain.
- Username/Directory/Subdomain Name – This folder is going to be the folder that cPanel will create in the public_html folder. Usually, you will want to make sure the name doesn’t already exist or cPanel will automatically suggest you a possible domain name and recommend you a few suggestions.
- Create a Password – Don’t forget to add a password. The password you are going to choose will be used for the FTP account which will be automatically made by cPanel.
That’s it, your new domain is successfully created. You can now upload the files from your website to a particular addon folder which as automatically created in the public_html folder.
In order to delete or remove the addon domain you need to login to your cPanel account, click addon domains and at the bottom click remove.
